RAM memory

I finally had time to open my PC and look what kind of ram memory I have.

2x Samsung M378B5773DH0-CH9 2GB (PC3-10600) Dimm with Speed: PC3-10600 (1333Mhz)

I want to upgrade it to 2x8gb. My question is do i need to have the 1333mhz or can i also upgrade that to 1600 or higher
the 1333 is almost €20 higher in price then the 1600mhz (€67)

both slots are occupied, so I need/want to upgrade both slots.

with google I can find that both card need to have the same speed. Its for me not clear if you change both if you need to keep the same speed

That depends on your motherboard. You have a so called RAMbus on it that is supposed to be able to handle several speeds, and that can be set in the BIOS, but !!! not every speed works with the CPU you have and not every 'speed' indicated by the RAM manufacturer is actually correct. To tackle this, MOBO makers give out a list of approved memory modules. If you give me the name and type of your motherboard I can help you look for the right memory modules. The price of modules can vary depending on the maker of course, but also how many they produce(d). Both the databus and the modules are a bit flexible, but could still have a mismatch in speed. Speed is also something that is not 'zailgmakend' Jo. They also have different delay factors for instance. Give me your motherboard name and type and we will look at it together.

Always upgrade the 2 matching slots together, if you only have 2, then 2. On my motherboards I usually have 4 and I plug them in 2 by 2 as well, always the exact same module and to avoid all issues, that means 2 x 2 x the same module, so 4 the same. There are no motherboards I know of that let you set specific delays and speeds per memory slot, so if you set it for one (of a 2 slot bank) you set it for the other. So yes, you must have 2 identical dimm modules!

Okay, Medion PC, Aldi? This is a MSI motherboard, with a dual core Intel cpu i5. Second important thing is which operating system you are running. If you are running Windows 10, then you don't have enough memory for almost anything and this is a common mistake made by... well... Aldi. My favorite answer would be, never buy a Medion computer again. My second favorite one would be, buy a new motherboard for this computer case, transfer the Intel chip and all else and get better computer memory for the new mobo. For instance a programmable Asus mobo. Think for instance Asus Prime B365M-A or K, get a new CPU cooler with it if needed. Since you bought the PC as one, and not in parts, it is not 100% certain you can take the old CPU fan to the new board. On that motherboard you can plug in almost any memory module you want, and then up to 64 GB if you want. Problem is, if you are not used to building PC's this can be a scary operation. Plus your windows needs to be re-registered/activated and if you bought it with the operating system, knowing Medion, you have NO IDEA about your activation codes.

If you want to build half a new PC, I would be happy to help you, but I understand if you want to go just for the RAM upgrade right now. IN that case you can get the ones that are offered for the MS 7728 online, the ones for 49 euro (1600Hz) like the MP1600D3/8G (x2, so 98 euro total). They will work, but it deserves a bit of tweaking in the BIOS, because it will tone down to 1333. That's the databus speed of the MOBO. The chip can handle more, the DIMMs can handle more, but the MOBO can't. If you let the DIMMs slow down by themselves it is usually slower than base 1333 chips, so there is some tweaking with delays/cycles in the BIOS. The AMI BIOS will allow for a bit of that. As long as you don't touch the voltages you can't kill them, and if you do it wrong it is very simple: the PC will simply not start up. Then go back to the BIOS and try the next setting. Or leave it to the system and put up with the extra delays.

P.S. Buying Samsung instead of Transcend is a risk in the sense that there is no guarantee that the bigger DIMM of the same brand will work too on any particular MOBO. Best get the one everyone uses, or make a deal with the shop that if they don't work you can trade them in or send them back.

The PC is already 8 years old and runs Ubuntu 14.04.
I think i will manage it to keep run it for now and make more money this summer and build a new PC after the summer.
